Welcome!

Welcome to the Whitworth Writing Rally Web Site.

The Writing Rally is held the first Saturday in November each year. It attracts approximately 700 children (we've had as many as 876) from preschool through 6th grade each with a parent or other adult. Yes, each child must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent, great grandparent, older sibling, babysitter or friend.

During the Rally, each child with parent will meet and see a presentation by a major children's author. The child and parent will then attend a writing session conducted by trained educators. During the two-hour writing session, the child and parent will create, illustrate, and share their book with other members of the group. This is the highlight of the Rally. Preschoolers have a shortened one hour session.

The Writing Sessions are organized by grade level. That is, preschool, kindergarten, 4th, 5th and 6th graders are each in their separate age group. Many of the 4th graders will be in computer writing sessions with their parents while the 5th and 6th graders will write on their own while the parents do a related activity. There are also groups for 1-2 and 2-3. This way the Writing Session leaders can organize an activity and book that is age appropriate. Do you have to write on the Session Leaders' idea? No! If the child has another topic, write on it!

Materials: All writing materials are provided by the rally committee.

Cost: There is a registration fee to cover the costs of the rally. This fee has been kept to a minimum with the help of PEMCO Insurance and Clark Pacific Real Estate Co., which provides the Rally with a grant each year to help defray the costs.
