The Writing Rally at a Glance

Sponsors: School of Education, Whitworth University; Northeast Washington
Elementary Principals' Association, and Spokane Area Council of the
International Reading Association.

Governance: The Writing Rally is governed by a Steering Committee with
representation from nearly all the school districts in the Spokane
Area, Whitworth University, elementary principals, private schools, and
the home schooling association. All members of the Steering
Committee also fulfill roles as committee chairs or members.

Finances: The Writing Rally is financially independent of all the
sponsors, is nonprofit and maintains its own budget. The annual
budget is now approximately $11,000 to $12,000 with a carryover of
$2,000 to $3,000. All funds are derived from a registration fee of
$17.00 per child, book purchases, and t-shirts purchased by Rally
presenters/workers. To assist in keeping the registration fees as
low as possible, PEMCO and Clark-Pacific Realty each provide the
Rally with $2,000.

Labor: The Writing Rally is staffed, totally, by volunteers with the
exception of some hired secretarial help. Although the chair is a
Whitworth faculty member, she gets no pay for the Rally, nor do
any of the other workers. Approximately 200 teachers, school
administrators, graduate students, and undergraduate students
work on the Rally each year.

Whitworth University Provides: All facilities at no charge, printing and
mailing at cost, some secretarial assistance at no charge, one
semester of graduate credit at cost and undergraduate credit at no
cost and publicity at no cost. (Also, a lot of prayers and moral
support).
